Highlight shallow areas using custom depth shading in i-Boating

i-Boating app now supports custom depth shading to highlight shallow areas. I've included a specific example at the end illustrating how to use and before/after screenshots.

1. Without depth shading
2. With depth shading
3. How I figured out what value to choose for shading?

Before depth shading
For e.g. this is what the default map looks for New Jersey inter coastal waterway.  There are two depth areas here (one below 2.95 ft and the other above it). When navigating you would want to highlight the shallow area with a different color.

With depth shading

Here is how to use depth shading:

  • Tap menu/overflow button and select "Settings"
  • Scroll down and check the box that says "Enable Custom Depth Shading"
  • Change shallow depth to 0 ft and safety depth to 2.9f ft
  • Tap Save
Here is a screenshot with custom depth shading.

How to figure out what value to use?

You can use object query to find out depth range of an area. Simply long touch any where int the area and select "Object Query".

Depth Offset in i-Boating.

We have recently added support for water level offset in i-Boating. This lets i-Boating users adjust the depth shown on the maps. If you have had less rain in your area (e.g California drought), you may want to decrease the depth shown on the map by specifying a negative value for depth offset. This would change all depth values shown on the map.

  • Tap on menu/overflow button (lower right on iPhone, top right on Android).
  • Select Settings
  • Type in the depth offset you wish to choose.
  • Tap to Save
I've also attached a few screenshots below showing the settings screen on both iOS and Android.

An adjustable height split screen enables you to look at realtime depth and water temperature along with yourlocation on the map. In Sonar mode, the app turns on auto follow:
  • Continuously update device’s location on the chart.
    • This is the standard moving map that shows device’s position on the chart
  • Real time track overlay of the course you have sailed so far.
    • This shows the course you have already sailed in dark red/brown color. This gives you an idea ofhow you got to your current location.
  • Direction arrow showing a boat’s location if current course is maintained
    • This is helpful to avoid any sailing hazards esp if you are sailing for fun and not following a predefined route.

Sonar Logging/Free HD Bathymetry maps

iBoating Route Manager now includes support for Sonar Logs. Share your Sonar Logs with iBoating
community and contribute to the creation of HD bathymetry maps for your waterbody.
